We could not get a campsite on the more desirable beach loops but did get a site on the second loop, perfectly situated next to a hill full of trees which gave us a bit of privacy (and wildlife.) This was our site #125...
We quickly set up camp and then hit the beach while it was low tide. This was our beach caravan...
Let me tell you that NO spin class at the gym can prepare you for pulling this though a crowded camp and then through the SAND!?! What a workout!!!
The beach was long and unspoiled by development (other than the camp site) and full of families. I am still coming to terms with the brown water (notice I did not say "disgusting"..I am improving!!) but the beach was lovely.
After a fun, HOT afternoon we headed back to camp to eat dinner. Hubby and I figured we would make this camping trip super easy so we grilled 12 chicken breasts before we left and planned to have chicken salad the first night and wraps the second night with plenty to snack on in between. We also brought supplies for SMORES!!! When I pulled the stuff out of the cooler Pnut knew what we were making because he and Chelsea had made smores together (what a memory!?) but this was their first time actually making them around a campfire. We had debated NOT building a fire, esp since it was 97 degrees, but we decided that it really can't be called camping if you don't have a fire. I am SO glad we did! The boys loved it!
Lets say a few words about the wildlife. First of all, there was a family of "lions" living on the hill and in the trees next to our campsite. After the boys had gone to bed and we were quietly enjoying the fire I kept hearing the trees and ground russle behind us. There must of been 8 cats lolling about around us. It was a little freaky.
Earlier, when we were prepping dinner, Spud said "Deers!" Being on the beach I forgot that we were also in the woods, so when he first said deer I said "no way, there are no deer here." We look up and sure enough there are deer walking through our site, casually enjoying their grassy dinner.
I did not get a photo because I was so irritated, but one more woodland creature visited our campsite that evening... Mr. Racoon. He pried open our cooler and ate all of our chicken and most of Hubby's bologna. He ate 9 chicken breasts!?! NINE!! And he sat in my favorite blue chair to eat his dinner too, leaving little greasy coon paw prints all over it. We decided that he probably fell out of his tree that day while in a food coma... thats a LOT of chicken for one racoon!!
Early early the next morning I saw the first light of day so I took a quick photo of my precious sleeping baby boys and snuck off to the beach for some alone time. It was a hazy morning off shore but the quiet, open, empty beach was amazing.
By the time I got back everyone was up and ready for an adventurous day! We planned on riding our bikes along the main road a mile and a half to the lighthouse. It would of only been a half mile walk along the beach but the tides were not cooperating. The bike ride through the park was beautiful...the ride on the main road not so fun. We did not climb to the top of the lighthouse this time but did take a lot of photos of it! :o)
The last morning we were there we took a long bike ride in the opposite direction of the lighthouse. Once again, quite a workout!! One thing that was really cool about the entire camping weekend was how many kids there were and they were all outside! I kept joking about the "bicycle gangs" roaming everywhere. True, a lot of the kids went into campers with AC and satelite dishes once it got dark, but at least they were outside during the day. Overall it was a great camping trip and we can't wait to do it again in September... we will be heading north west into the mountains for a hopefully MUCH cooler camping experience.
