Savannah Ship Day

When you see a post on Facebook that says... "In recognition of the SS Savannah’s historic trans-Atlantic crossing in 1819, and the establishment of National Maritime Day by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum will offer Free Admission on Friday, May 22, 2015." you grab your home schoolers, and their buddy, and you go!

What a cool place!

The museum is located in the former William Scarbrough House. I have walked past this house numerous times and never realized what was hidden inside.
Full of beautiful architecture and many, many ships...old ships....new ships...military ships...coast guard ships...wheels off ships...wooden figureheads (which were super cool!)...

I wish I would of had more time to read about each of the ships, but I had 3 boys to keep up with...
which means I had a small amount of THIS during our museum visit...

So, this is NOT a post that will share all of the fascinating things that we learned that day.
We did NOT stay very long.
Okay, I will quickly share two things that I WAS able to speed read. One, I thought the "Rolling Pins" were interesting...

And two, I took a photo of the ceramic kitty for a friend and THEN I read the significance. Ha!

Anyhooooo, we were off to River Street for lunch, hoping to see a Moran tugboat cruise by. No work so no cruise by, but we did get an invite to visit! Over the bridge we went!!

Always a good day when we can visit Dad at work!

Bird-Day Party

Spud is 6!!!
He celebrated with a Bird-Day Party!
We had met Capt. Andy, the red tailed hawk, at the farmers market back in December. When thinking of ways to celebrate Spud's birthday the idea came up, we should invite the birds! Lila Arnold, a retired 2nd grade teacher, is now the "Raptor Lady" and agreed to join us. She was AWESOME!!! We learned SO much!
Capt. Andy the Red Tailed Hawk.

Capt. Andy was found down on the highway after being hit by a car.  He had severe head trauma and lost his left eye.  He is non-releasable due to his permanent eye injury.

Breezy the Barred Owl.
We learned his call sounds like "Who cooks for you?"

Breezy fell from his nest over 60 feet above onto the bank of a river.  He was partially submerged and struggling to stand.  He received a broken leg and was also blind for over a month due to severe head trauma.  He has since regained some vision but can only see shadows due to retinal damage.  He is non-releasable due to his permanent eye injury.

He got to hold Odin the Eastern Screech Owl.

Odin was found in the road. Odin eventually lost his right eye due to head trauma.  He was named after the Norse god, Odin, who gave up an eye for wisdom.

Of course, there were cupcakes...

 Best Bird-Day EVER!!!

No trip to Savannah is complete without a mosey through Forsythe Park and I was THRILLED to see the fountain up and running! In the past it has been empty for reconstruction, painting, rehab, etc. Not this time woohooo!!!
