We did have a GREAT week of crabbing! On Friday we took the "new boat" out up these narrow creeks just up river from the Oyster Factory. They were FULL of crab!! As soon as you dropped the chicken into the water you had a crab. It was great..until...we noticed the tide had gone out a bit more than expected. (Its hard to watch the tides when you are having so much fun crabbin'!) So the awesome creeks turned into this...
Yep, that's the river and the mouth of the creek waaaaaaaaay off in the distance. And as harmless as that mud looks it is in fact very scary Pluff Mud, a thick, quick sand like goo that you sink up to your knees in. What makes it extra scary are all the razor sharp oyster shells that lurk underneath the mud, so if you are dumb enough to step in it you will definitely lose your shoes and possibly a few toes too.
So we were essentially stuck, in a skiff, with two toddlers and NO beer for almost 4 hours. Yes, FOUR HOURS!?! Luckily the two toddlers are the BEST kids on the planet that were perfectly contented to keep crabbin' in the 4 inches of water that was left under the boat...
It was really cool that the crabs were still dumb enough to go after the "chicken on a string" in such shallow water and we could actually watch them eat... usually, because the water is so dark, you can't see the crab until you have pulled him out of the water.
When crabbin' got boring little Spud had enough sense to snuggle in on momma's lap for a nap.
Pnut trying to push the boat off the mud bank...um, not working.
After a total of 5 hours on the boat, when we FINALLY had enough water to get back to the truck, we had to admit it was a fun day. I would rather be stuck up a creek with my three favorite Mercers (oops four favorite Mercers...Grammy was with us too!) than stuck in traffic or at an airport or anywhere else in the world!! Oh yea, did I mention our cooler was FULL of crabbies. Mmmmmmmmmm yummy crabbies!
